比特币作为币圈的代表货币一直有着不可撼动的地位。2013年比特币市值更是占据了整个数字货币市场的95%以上。随着加密货币市场日渐火热，比特币之外的加密货币价格也迅速攀升，包括以太坊在内的其他币种也不相上下，虽然无法撼动比特币的老大地位，但也在不断侵蚀着其原有份额。
加密货币Dash CEO RyanTaylor预计，随着更多加密货币项目进入市场，比特币市场份额将持续下降。Taylor表示，一个区块链不可能最完美得满足所有市场需求，如Ripple的XRP意在改善跨境支付，Dash则寻求成为电商交流的便利工具。然而，2018年随着其他数字货币暴跌，比特币市场占有率再次超过50%。
如今比特币地位受区块链技术影响，中国、俄罗斯与美国韩国等原本不看好比特币的国家，因为比特币的区块链技术慢慢改观。
